INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the 1994 edition of BLOOD LINES RATER (tm).
BLR is meant for anyone who appreciates the drama, competition & fun
of a day at the races. Even if you never own a horse, the BLR should make
you a better bettor. Simply knowing that a horse is well-bred won't
automatically make you a millionaire or even a constant winner. It will,
however, alert you to the possibilities that exist almost daily at tracks
all over the globe. I am a pedigree nut, study 'em every chance I can.
I have placed more than one losing wager on an animal based solely on his
parents; sometimes you climb out on a limb and it gets chopped off; that's
horse racing! On the reverse side of the coin, there is no greater thrill
than cashing a ticket on a horse that Joe Q. Public, immersed in his tip
sheets (a waste of money) always seems to miss. To ferret out a first-time
starter in a baby race with the potential to crush his/her field is an
exciting proposition. One of the most challenging (and rewarding) types
of races is a field of first-time starters, with nothing more to gauge
their racing potential than their pedigree and a few dubious workouts.
Many dim-witted, loudmouthed (and terminally dense) diehard racegoers
proudly proclaim that they always pass such races. A BIG MISTAKE!
Some of the best payoffs, straight and gimmick, can be found in such
seemingly "unplayable" races.
I hope that the BLR piques your interest in thoroughbred racing. On the
surface it is a dirty business, full of sleazy, greedy, self-centered
trainers, agents and jockeys, who, truth be told, don't give a damn about
the racing public. Knowing this, why would anyone patronize a race track?
The food is mediocre and overpriced; the up-front costs are ridiculous.
People who go the track on a regular basis are there for one reason:
to make a PROFIT. You can only be a consistent winner if you arm yourself
with all the knowledge at your disposal. To win, you must do three things
well: READ, READ, and READ. Study the Racing Form (take it home with you
AFTER the races and read every word), subscribe to breeding magazines,
state and national, keep records of your wagers (make notes on your reasons
for placing each bet), and most importantly, keep an open mind. I constantly
hear older players at the track bemoan their continual losing ways. They
will continue to do so if they don't put in the time to make themselves
informed bettors. Playing the horses CAN be profitable. Your purchase of the
BLR is a step on the road to improved, enlightened play. With the continual
turnover in the breeding industry, the BLR is a must to track the hot new
sires who emerge each year.
Remember: the fact that you are at the track in no way requires you to
bet any/all of the races. Pick your spots, even if it means sitting on
your hands for long stretches. "Action" for action's sake is self-defeating.
GOOD LUCK! See you at the cashier's window.
